This week was a tough one but then someone close to me reminded me this is part of the journey not the destination. Everything throughout our journey strengthens us for the next chapter…the next level.

I was reminded to have grace, to take a step back, and list everything I am grateful for right now.

So I would love to share with you:

How many spelling words does your child get per week?

Some of my students get 20 words per week. How do they learn how to spell each word?

First, we start with patterns we see in their words (ex. ee, ea, igh) and we box the pattern. Next, we rainbow trace with 5 colors (shown here) while saying how to spell it out loud. This helps my students process how to spell the word by incorporating all of their learning styles: reading/writing, visual, kinesthetic(hands-on), auditory. Next, we trace the word in the air with our finger 3 times and throw a ball back and forth. Then we write it down (shown here). For this particular activity we wrote on the mirror with a dry erase marker but you can use pencil and paper.

I teach my students using this method because if they ever forget how to spell the word, they refer back by closing their eyes and practicing tracing it in the air or saying it to themselves. It’s a mind-body connection. Instead of allowing fear and anxiety from taking tests overpower their thoughts, they just focus on how to trace the word or how they remember hearing it.

I tell my students just how they memorize which buttons to press during their favorite video game or where the “subscribe” button is on YouTube, they have the power to memorize the patterns of their spelling words.
