Does your child struggle in reading?

In this video I share 5️⃣ part framework to teaching your child how to read and I share tips on how you can assess your child at home. Use this framework while helping them improve in their reading skills:

1️⃣ Phonemic awareness—the knowledge that spoken words can be broken apart into smaller segments of sound known as phonemes.

>>>HOW TO ASSESS: Can your child sound out all letter sounds of alphabet individually? Can they identify what letter the word starts with by listening? Can they break up words into syllables? Can they identify when words rhyme? Can they spell words confidently?

2️⃣ Phonics—the knowledge that letters of the alphabet represent phonemes and that these sounds are blended together to form written words.

>>>HOW TO ASSESS: Do they struggle to sound out words? Do they get stuck on words when reading? Do they guess what words are? Do they read slowly and with difficulty?

3️⃣ Fluency—the ability to recognize words easily, read with greater speed, accuracy, and expression, and better understand what is read.

>>>HOW TO ASSESS: Do they read slowly? Do they read like a robot and without expression? Do they feel overwhelmed by long texts? Do they struggle to understand what they read?

4️⃣ Vocabulary Development: Expand vocabulary by defining new words learning how to use them in a sentence.

>>>HOW TO ASSESS: Do they understand a question that included the vocabulary word? Do they tend to use the same words over and over again in their writing? Do they get confused with reading?

5️⃣ Comprehension: being able to understand and analyze what you read/listened to

>>>HOW TO ASSESS: Do they rush through reading quickly? Are they able to answer questions about what they just read with confidence? Do they prefer books with a lot of pictures?

Here’s how to teach your child two letter sounds

Here’s how to teach your child two letter sounds put together make one sound:

First, teach your child the individual letter sounds /s/ & /h/.

Next, teach your child two letter sounds put together make one sound /sh/.

Lastly, have them decode words with /sh/ in them. Make sure to box the /sh/ and place dots underneath each sound.

Pre-writing tip ✏️

Before your child writes letters with a pencil and traces them, have them form the letters with play-doh.

Forming the letters with play-doh will help them visually see the correct way each letter is formed. Then have them use their writing hand to trace the letter, say it’s letter name, and the sound. I typically have my students go over each letter 3 times each.

For example, in this video the student is learning the letter “m.” You’ll see how I’m directing him to start with the line down and then do the two arches for the m. He will repeat this three times.
