If I had a 1st grader who struggled with reading,

If I had a 1st grader who struggled with reading, I wouldn’t automatically start with 1st grade reading work. 📚

I’d go back to the foundation first and check:

✨ Can they name each letter?
✨ Can they tell me the sound that letter makes?
✨ Can they connect the correct sound to the correct letter consistently?

Those letter-sound connections matter because they affect reading, spelling, and writing. And sometimes a child can move up through grade levels with gaps that were never fully addressed.

Once letters and sounds are solid, I’d move into:

Letters & sounds ➡️ blending ➡️ phonics/spelling patterns ➡️ stronger reading

The goal is always to start at the root of the struggle, not just the child’s current grade level. 💛

…and I’ll share where I would start.

After working with hundreds of students over the past 10 years, one of the biggest things I’ve learned is that the skill a child is struggling with right now isn’t always where the problem actually started.

That’s why we begin our programs with an educational assessment. It helps us identify which grade-level skills and standards a student has mastered, where the gaps are, and—most importantly—where we need to begin.

We don’t simply coach a 5th grader on 5th-grade work because they’re in 5th grade.

We meet them where they are.
Assess ➡️ Find the gaps ➡️ Strengthen the foundation ➡️ Build our way up.

That’s when we can see progress really take off. 🚀

And my ultimate goal? I don’t want a student to need us forever. I want them to develop the skills and confidence to become a strong, independent learner. 🥹💛

If I had a 5th grader who struggled with writing,

If I had a 5th grader who struggled with writing, I wouldn’t start with essays. ✍️

I’d start by figuring out exactly where the struggle begins.

First: Can they write one complete sentence with a capital letter, a complete thought, and ending punctuation? I’d also take a look at their spelling because sometimes what looks like a “writing problem” may actually be a phonics or spelling gap.

If they can write a sentence, great! Next I’d see if they can turn their ideas into a paragraph.

But what if they KNOW what they want to say…and completely freeze when it’s time to write? 👀

That’s when I’d pull out the Voice Memos app.

🎙️ Give them a question or writing prompt.
🎙️ Have them answer it OUT LOUD.
🎙️ Play their response back.
🎙️ Listen to about 3 words → pause → write them down.
🎙️ Repeat until their entire response is on paper.

And for now? Don’t worry about perfect spelling or punctuation. We can edit that afterward!

The first goal is helping them make this connection:

💡 Writing is simply communicating your thoughts on paper.

Once they can hear their own voice and see those thoughts become words on a page, we can take small steps toward stronger sentences, paragraphs, organization, spelling, and editing.

We don’t have to tackle everything at once. Build the writer first, then improve the writing. 💛

If I had a 5th grader who struggled in math, I wou $If I had a 5th grader who struggled in math, I wouldn’t start with 5th grade math. 👀 I’d start by finding the foundational skill that’s holding them back—and very often, it’s multiplication facts. By 4th and 5th grade, students are expected to use multiplication constantly for fractions, division, greatest common factor, least common multiple, and more. If those facts aren’t automatic, everything else can feel SO much harder. Here’s what I would do: ✨ Quiz multiplication facts from 0–12 ✨ Look for answers within about 3 seconds ✨ Turn any facts they hesitate on into flashcards ✨ Rainbow trace them while saying the fact aloud ✨ Add movement while practicing ✨ Use timed practice and have them compete against their own previous score Then we repeat until those facts are mastered. Once multiplication is solid, I’d move into GCF + LCM ➡️ fractions ➡️ more advanced grade-level skills. Sometimes a child doesn’t need more practice with the thing they’re currently struggling with—they need us to go back and strengthen the skill underneath it. 💛 Save this if you have a 4th or 5th grader who says, “I’m just bad at math.” #5thGradeMath #MathHelpForKids #ElementaryMath #MathTutor #ParentTips$

But once they have a simple routine to follow, it starts to make so much more sense:

✨ Subtract
✨ Bring Down
