What is summer slide? Summer slide is when a chil

What is summer slide?

Summer slide is when a child loses at least one month of academic calendar learning during the summer if they aren’t consistent in their academics.

How to avoid summer slide? Here are my 5 tips:

1️⃣ invest in workbooks to practice skills learned throughout the school year. Do at least 2 pages a day.
2️⃣ read everyday 📚
3️⃣ keep a routine, set goals, & rewards 🤓
4️⃣ play outside ☀️

So proud of her! 😭🙏❤️

Genius Faith (2nd grader) completed a 12 week academic coaching program and the progress she made was outstanding!

When I first started working with Faith, I gave her an Educational Assessment to pinpoint what common core standards she was struggling in. Based on her results, she struggled with the top two foundational skills in reading: phonemic awareness & phonics. She had difficulty sounding out individual letters and then blending the letters to form words. She also had difficulty with spelling and writing. Once we focused on these specific areas, her progress soared!

I noticed another area she struggled in was her way of thinking. When she would get to a challenging topic, she would automatically *sigh,* say she couldn’t do it and give up. I told her that she could do it and that I was there to help her. Together we would work as a team. I let Faith know that I understood how she felt because I used to feel this way when I was younger. I used to feel frustrated/stressed when I came to a challenging topic. However, I told her it’s important to note that the way you view things is all about your perspective. Something challenging can be accomplished. We may just need a little extra help to see it in a different way. What we are doing now, how we are learning now, isn’t working so we have to try a different approach to see what does work.

Faith is an active and visual learner. She needed to be moving and seeing visuals as she learned to help keep her engaged and learn. By the end of the program, she read 16 books all on her own and developed a growth mindset. Lastly, she felt confident in herself and in her academics.

Through 1:1 academic coaching, Faith had the support & accountability she needed to thrive in learning.

Tears of joy! 😭🙏❤️

Genius Carlitos (1st grader) completed a 4 week academic coaching program and the progress he made in such a little amount of time is incredible!

At the start of the program, he disliked school and would get in trouble for his behavior. As I worked with him 1:1 and got to know him, I noticed a pattern in his behavior. He would tend to get in trouble for his behavior because he had a challenging time managing his emotions. He also felt insecure when it came to reading because he wasn’t confident in the foundational skills of reading.

I told him my story of when I was younger and felt insecure about my multiplication facts. I also told him I understood what it felt like to be angry/stressed/anxious and not know how to manage it. I told him I would show him ways to manage his emotions but I would need him to put effort into our lessons each day. I told him how magnificent he was and even though something is challenging, we don’t give up. As his academic coach, I told him I’ll be there to challenge him, encourage him, & support him. I also told him no matter what, we would always TRY. I asked him if he was ready to work as a team along this journey and he said YES.

How can you help your child improve their vocabula

How can you help your child improve their vocabulary?

FLASHCARDS ⚡️

This is an oldie but goodie way to teach your child new vocabulary words. Write the word with highlighter on one side of the flash card. Have your child trace each letter of the word with 5 colors. This is called rainbow tracing 🌈. As they trace one letter at a time, have them say each letter out loud and then the full word. Swipe ➡️ to see a video.

On the back of flash card, have your child draw a picture of the word or something that represents it and help them write a sentence with the word.
